2022 has been a long year, and it’s gone by in a flash📸. The DLC team sat together one evening after a delicious fondue🫕 dinner in Campus Biotech and reviewed the past year’s successes, challenges, events, improvements, and stories.

In between festive music 🎶 and warm wine🍷(vin chaud), we discovered that:

🎥The DLC YouTube channel became very popular✨with 65.7 thousand total views in 2022🎉!

What is it about🤓?

We chose to use YouTube as a communication and training 🏋️‍♂️ channel. As our tools🛠 and methods are constantly evolving, we want to ensure that the DLC community is up-to-date and prepared to use them at all times.

In Youtube, you will find plenty of DLC tutorials to guide you through the DLC process, data analysis, and presentation of your results📊.

✨Check it out HERE!

In 2022, our most popular YouTube tutorials were🎉:

Have you watched them yet 👓 ?

Our big achievement of 2022 is the “Multi-animal pose estimation, identification and tracking with DeepLabCut” in Nature Methods.

You can read it HERE! Also, don’t forget to check out the respective GitHub Repository HERE and try out our colab notebooks! This is the best way to understand the paper’s content and integrate this tool ⛏ in your data analysis pipeline in the future.

In the summer, we hosted the first edition of the DLC Residency Program, which was terrific 🤩. Six 6️⃣ fellow scientists from around the world flew to Geneva, forged a powerful team, and created magic✨ during the summer☀️!

THIS is their story!

And these are their mentors🎖, who work relentlessly for DLC🐭 and science🔬!

If you are wondering what the DLC residency program is and whether you are eligible, you should check out the official website HERE and prepare your application for 2024!

The application process for 2023 is closed, but we are determined to continue 💪!

We would love to hear from you and have you join us in Geneva✈️!

Before the end of 2022, DeepLabCut was one of the central pieces of the “Modern Approaches to Behavioural Analysis” neurokit hosted by the Cajal advanced neuroscience training program.

You can have a look at the program and the structure of the course HERE!

The course was entirely hands-on 🙌, truly global 🗺 with participants being connected from many different countries and happening in different modes 🧰 online and in-person. At the same time, there was live and pre-recorded material. A truly unique experience created 🪄 a connected community inside the DLC Community.

It had it all 👀 :

  1. Jays 🦜 that crack magic tricks🪄.
  2. Robots 🤖 that copy lizards🦎 and walk on walls.
  3. Rats 🐀 that play hide and seek.
  4. Humans 🙋‍♀️🙋 that debate and exchange opinions.

And a fantastic culinary creation👩‍🍳. Unfortunately, we couldn’t taste it, but you must agree it looks yummy 😋!!

Stay tuned for the 2023 edition and join us from anywhere in the world 🌍 to play with DLC and debate the future of neuroscience.

What will we do in 2023🔎?

Even more behavioural analysis tools from the developers of DLC are coming up 🧨.

Do you know cebra🦓? Cebra is our new✨ project that leverages joint behavioural and neural data to produce to produce high performance latent spaces. You can learn more about this research work HERE!
