Five 5️⃣ years ago, Konrad met Alexander Mathis in one of the first DeepLabCut workshops (December 2018✨) hosted by the Nencki Open Lab, which set the scene for his future Ph.D. study🐀, interest in AI tools and data analysis and, of course, DLC.

Today is Friday, November 2022, and Konrad visited our research labs🔬 in Switzerland to prepare for the first edition of the DLC-Cajal global neuroscience course🏁. So I had the pleasure of meeting him in person finally 🤩.

Check out the course ✨HERE! Stay tuned for upcoming events!

We sat at a quiet place on the rooftop🔝 one evening and talked about science, ⚽️life, and the future.

PhD life, research work, and experiments🐀:

I started as a clinical psychologist but realized that it didn’t suit me. At that time, I found an opening to work on neuroscience in an experimental study involving rats.

DeepLabCut (DLC)🐭

The 2018 DeepLabCut workshop at the Nencki open lab was a defining moment for my work. It introduced me to new ways of looking at and analyzing the data.

Nothing similar existed back then👀. Annotation was a tedious and time-consuming task for the research community, but then DLC appeared, and it was simple, easy to use, and efficient.

How can you not be interested?✨

We could even go back to old paradigms and projects and possibly extract new information.

I thought to myself: “Let’s just put those new methods to good use!🤩”

Most of my Ph.D. is based on DeepLabCut!

That is how I got interested 🔍 in AI in general, and I started exploring other neural networks and the work of other labs.

Do you know that you are the most active member of the DLC Community?

Yes, I guess I do a lot of tech support 😅.

I enjoy helping people, and DLC is an easy-to-use tool with great docs. However, if you are not super tech-savvy, you can easily get confused and a little scared. Sometimes, you can get stuck because of simple problems.

People should be able to do their work and harvest the capabilities of new technological tools without getting stuck for hours or days on a minor issue.

Most issues are simple and thus easy to help! It is kinda my break during the day. I have the forum open, and I check it out when a new message appears.

📣A big shout out to the fantastic DLC Community🙏: When a reply fixes your problem please mark it as a solution! It will help others struggling the same way as you do!

At the end of our talk we moved back to the office and tried out a new AI tool called whisper created by OpenAI to transcribe our discussion 📃!

It worked✨! You can check it out HERE!
